Josiah Spode I born 1733

Born in 1733, Josiah Spode I was orphaned at the age of six, when his father died a pauper. Despite this inauspicious start to life, he went on to establish a large and successful pottery business. He and his son, Josiah Spode II, introduced and marketed new kinds of pottery that dramatically changed the course of ceramic history and made their name a household word.
