Willow 1

Pattern Category: Based on Chinese Originals

Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares

Dimensions:

  • Length: 7.8 inches
  • Width: 7.8 inches

Description:

Printed on a molded and indented pearlware dessert dish, this early example of Spode's Willow pattern is without the Nankin, or inner border.  The outer border consists of geometric motifs and Oriental symbols. It is a fine example of early line-engraved printing.

Editor's Note:  You are invited to watch the short video of Robert Copeland speaking about Spode's Willow pattern.  Just click on the link near the bottom of the page.  In it, he jokingly describes the three men on the bridge as "socialists" because they are walking toward the "left" of the pattern.
