Cheese Cradle

Pattern Category: European and Mediterranean

Object Type: Useful, Ornamental and Toys

  • Length: 12.2 inches

Exhibited here is an earthenware cheese cradle printed in blue underglaze in Spode's  Rome (or Tiber) pattern.  This pattern was inspired by two views taken from engravings found in Views of Rome and its Vicinity published by J. Merigot and R. Edwards, London, 1796-98.  The two related source prints can be found in the pattern example in this exhibition.

The cheese cradle was designed to hold a large circular cheese on its side.
