Buffalo 2

Alternate Names: Boy on a Buffalo

Dimensions:

  • Length: 12.5 inches

Description:

The pattern is seen here on a marked earthenware segment to a supper set printed in blue underglaze.  The dish would originally have had an accompanying cover.  This is one of two versions of Buffalo or Boy on a Buffalo, included in this exhibit.  The pattern is one of Spode's earliest Chinoiserie patterns. Robert Copeland has documented the variations in the pattern and labeled them "A-E."  Spode produced Type A and Type B, the latter is the pattern shown here. The design was taken from an original Chinese Export porcelain pattern and was made by several potteries in the late 18th century. Its popularity continued for about 50 years. Most examples that survive today are not marked making it difficult to attribute objects to a particular maker.
