Early designs were frequently adopted from the patterns found on original Chinese porcelain exports.  Later on, Spode's designers sought inspiration from artists' renditions of local and distant places, as well as from literary works and botanical studies often found in engravings employed as illustrations for popular publications of the period.  These designs were developed into successful individual patterns as well as series patterns such as Spode's Greek, Aesop's Fables, and the Indian Sporting and Caramanian series.
