Willow 2

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 6.1 in inches

Description:

This pattern is shown here on a round indented earthenware tea plate printed in blue underglaze with the Standard Willow border and a nankin, or inner border.  As in the case with Mandarin,  Spode used the Chinese Porcelain pattern named Two Birds as a source for this version of the Willow pattern.  In addition to the inner border, other design elements  were added, namely a bridge, the three figures crossing it, and a fence.

Curator's Note:  You are invited to watch the short video of Robert Copeland speaking about Spode's Willow pattern.  Just click on the link near the bottom of this page.    In the interview,  Robert describes the three men on the bridge as "socialists".   In this instance,  he failed to mention that he often referred to them as "socialists" because they are seen walking toward the "left" in the pattern.  This was a bit of humor that Robert often injected into his comments about the Willow pattern.
