Chinese Flowers

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 9.75 inches

Description:

Exhibited on a round earthenware dinner plate, this variation of Spode's Chinese Flowers pattern is printed in blue underglaze with enameling in cobalt blue.  The flowers on the left and right are chrysanthemums.  In the middle is a Chinese variety of orchid or hemerocallis (day lily).  While this pattern was designed to have color added, as in this example,  it is one of the few outline prints that were regularly issued in plain blue without enameling or added colors.  It probably dates from 1815.
