Description:

This rare c. 1820's commemorative pattern was printed in green on an earthenware dessert dish with a portrait bust of Samuel Butler and the Union Wreath border.  A gilded line border was also added.  The Spode print was taken either from an engraving by G. Adcock or from a work by P. Thomson.  Butler (1612-1680) was the author of the epic satirical poem Hudibras.  It is not known for whom or for what occasion the dessert set, identified in the Spode Arms Proof Book as pattern 1796, was commissioned.
